According to an FDA report from March 9, 2000 (revised on October 15, 2002), consumers should be aware of the fact that expiration dates for cosmetics are just ‘rules-of-thumb. The FDA warns that if a product is not stored properly, its safety can expire before the date of expiration.
Cosmetics improperly stored can deteriorate significantly before their expiration date. Improper storage can include:
- Exposure to high temperatures
- Exposure to sunlight
- Consumers can inspect and open the product before final sale
Alternatively, products that are stored in ideal conditions can be used long after their expiration date.

Concealer expiration

- If the color, texture, or consistency of the product changes; if ingredients separate or settle; or if a smell develops, throw it out immediately.
